A brief guide to working with ambivalence in therapy, with some ambivalence-busting ideas! The author conceptualises ambivalence as a fear response and links it to Gray's behavioural inhibition and activation systems, giving rise to a classic approach-avoidance conflict.

Remembrance Day

On this day we remember all the victims and casualties of war. Among those are the civilian and military personnel who carry the psychological scars of trauma, having witnessed horrors that thankfully most of us will never have to endure. Further information and help can be found at Combat Stress.

Remembrance Day

I think it is important that we do not forget the psychological victims of war, all those people who suffered with Post-traumatic stress disorder but it was not recognised as such. Many broken men were executed. And still many current and ex-service personnel struggle with the psychological scars of armed conflicts, as do also their families and civilians exposed to stresses we can barely imagine.

Further details can be seen in my PTSD download and you can find sources of help here.

Psycho Politico

It appears that the New Year will hold many challenges for us as individuals and for society as a whole as the full effects of the economic crisis start to become more apparent. It seems perverse - or politically malignant? - to create a social/economic structure where the victims will suffer increased problems with their mental health and family relationships, and become more susceptible to developing substance misuse problems, and at the same time to cut back on the services - both statutory and third sector - which have traditionally supported people suffering from these difficulties.
